Ghoomar – the round-and-round dance performer at Delhi
Ghoomar, the traditional dance of Rajasthan, India, mainly performed by women, in flowing dresses called ghagra, Ghoomar performed during certain auspicious occasions, originated in Marwar, danced by Deepika Padukone in Padmavati. As a symbol of womanhood, Ghoomar of Marwar is generally performed at weddings and its various ceremonies such as Ladies Sangeet.

With two motions involved, it requires tremendous skill to maintain uniform distance throughout as well as look elegant in a group. Derived from the word ‘Ghoomna’, meaning a twirl or going round, Ghoomar takes a special place for the people of the state and is mentioned with pride by Rajasthanis. Apart from the skill and precision, it also requires stamina since it could go on for hours. No wonder it is a special attraction meant for exclusive occasions such as a grand wedding, a prominent festival, a social function, etc.
Ghoomar is a traditional women’s folk dance of Rajasthan, India which was developed by the Bhil tribe and was adopted by other Rajasthani communities. It is performed by groups of women in swirling robes and accompanied by men and women singing together.
This folk dance gets its name from ‘Ghoomna’, the pirouetting which displays the spectacular colors of the flowing ‘Ghaghara’, the long skirt of the Rajasthani women.
